Her work has aired on top networks and streaming services including ABC, NBC, Nickelodeon, Netflix, Amazon, PBS, Hulu, and ESPN, among others. Her most recent project, The Other Boys of Summer explores civil rights in America through the lives of the Negro League baseball players. The film is narrated by Cicely Tyson and features never-before-seen interviews with the trailblazers who played alongside of Jackie Robinson and changed baseball and America forever. Through the lens of America’s pastime, “The Other Boys of Summer” draws from our past to shine the spotlight on issues that dominate today’s headlines. We sat down with Lauren to learn about her journey as an independent creator, how she built her business, and what she has learned along the way.

What inspired you to start your business?

As a Producer and Director I wanted to work on projects that I would be proud to share.

What’s the most memorable lesson you’ve learned as an entrepreneur?

Working as a freelancer or owning your own business you have to work twice as hard. You don’t get to pick and choose what you work on like people think. But if you are willing to put in the work, the reward is worth it. You have to trust and believe in yourself, even when nobody is calling for work.

What sets you apart from other directors and producers?

Authenticity, Honesty and Experience. Tumbleweed Pictures, the production company behind The Other Boys of Summer, has a roster of talented professionals who provide production services for broadcast, digital and corporate clients. We listen first.

How has Bunker helped you build your business

Bunker provided me with affordable General Liability insurance when other companies quoted astronomical rates and didn’t listen or care.

What does the future hold for your business?

Producing and directing projects with people we like and telling stories that matter. 2020 is the 100th Anniversary of The Negro Leagues so we will be traveling the country honoring and celebrating their legacy by bringing The Other Boys of Summer Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) program to companies and communities.
